WASHINGTON, October 14, 2001—James R. O’Brien, director of Distribution and Postal Affairs for AOL Time Warner, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Mailers Council, the nation’s largest coalition of mailers. O’Brien has worked on postal issues for Time Inc. since 1994. Prior to that he was chief executive officer of Publishers Express. He is the former chairman of the Magazine Publisher Association’s Postal Committee, a current member of MPA’s Government Affairs Committee, and executive vice chairman of the Association for Postal Commerce. The Board establishes policy and oversees the long-term plans for the Mailers Council, a coalition of over 50 corporations, nonprofit organizations and major mailing associations. Council members represent for-profit and nonprofit mailers that use the United States Postal Service to deliver correspondence, publications, parcels, greeting cards and payments. Collectively the Council accounts for as much as 70 percent of the nation's mail volume. The Mailers Council believes that the USPS can be operated more efficiently, supports efforts aimed at containing postal costs, and has the ultimate objective of lower postal rates without compromising service.
